Unique Argentinian Wines

My desire to visit Argentina was not based solely on that country?s wines but also a life-long fascination with all things South America. This curiosity was based on Argentina?s blend of European traditions with indigenous American interpretations. After having traveled to Argentina on a wine excursion, the culture, people and terrain all were beyond my lofty expectations.

Argentina has a long-standing wine tradition and though they have had success with the international varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, etc., they really have made their mark with Malbec and Torrontes. Both of these varietals have their history in Europe but have found their greatest successes in Argentina. Of all the wines and wineries that I was fortunate enough to visit, there were two that particularly stood out.

Michel Torrino is a winery in the Northwest part of the county in the Cafayette Valley ? a remote and sparsely populated valley. Here they have some of the highest altitude vineyards in the world.

Torrontes, a varietal that is native to Spain, found its home in these high altitude vineyards of Argentina and has become a star. Michel Torrino ?Don David? Torrontes was by far and away the most interesting of the various Torrontes that I tasted. It is a more full bodied and exotic expression of Torrontes with a nose of ripe peaches and lychee nuts. It is a rich wine with tremendous mouth-feel and depth of character.

Malbec is a Bordeaux varietal ? traditionally a blending varietal, but in Argentina it has come into its own.Though I tried a number of Malbecs, the one that stood out was from Catena. A rich nose, followed by a full bodied yet approachable wine that is the perfect compliment to a well cooked piece of beef, particularly from grass fed cattle.

Hawkes Bay and Beyond

Well! Another adventure is here. I feel like I continually wonder what is around the corner. Recently it has been RAIN. The words from other New Zealand travelers who we met in Fiji keep echoing in my ears: "We just spent 3 weeks in NZ and it didn't rain once during the day!" Downpour has been following us around everywhere so far. But I really can't complain as we discovered that our two man tent with rain fly rocks! (Photos) Spending the day in Napier in the drizzle, however, wasn't so bad.

Please note: This will be long as I need to catch up - sorry Kim :) On the agenda: Wine Tasting I went wine tasting in Temecula with my mom, aunt, mother-in-law, sister, Rachel, Pickle, KFuj, and a previously unmentioned co-worker we'll call not-Jan (only Rach and Pickle will truly understand the humor in naming not-Jan - sorry). We visited South Coast Winery and Ponte Winery. Ponte was my favorite and I'd highly recommend it! It was my first time wine tasting and Pickle did a TREMENDOUS job

Wine Online For Your Reading Pleasure

Residential Wine Cellars

Wine has become a popular beverage with many Americans, and is sold almost everywhere. This is because it is studied consistently for its wide variety in taste, depending on where it's produced, and it can be an important part of a meal, since it is known to enhance the taste of certain foods. Thus, residential wine cellars allow a homeowner the space to store their favorite wines and/or build an impressive collection of vintages. Residential wine cellars are also very affordable and don't take up that much space.

Residential wine cellars allow a wine connoisseur to store wines for a long period of time, or "age" the wine. Aging a wine contributes to its taste and sophistication. Since a wine also records its environment in its taste, temperature, humidity, light, and vibration will also impact the taste of the wine in residential wine cellars. Generally, 55?F is the average temperature that wines should be kept at. 50? to 60?F is usually acceptable, but some white wines like to be as low at 45?F.

Sudden fluctuations in the temperature can adversely affect the wine's taste. Humidity of your cellar should stay between 60% and 80%. Exposing your cellar to light should be avoided, because light disrupts the aging process. Excessive vibration of your wine can disturb the sediments found in the bottle.

Residential wine cellars don't have to cost a lot of money. In fact, you can probably build residential wine cellars yourself with your extra basement space or use an alternative area in your house or apartment. A dark interior closet or pantry will work nicely, although don't store the wine near strong-smelling foods. Keep your wine away from stoves and heat sources, as they would allow the temperature to fluctuate too much. Cool, damp basements are good as well.

Out with the bad juju...

If you hadn't noticed, I've been in a weird headspace the past week (or decade, your call). It seemed to culminate (I hope) this weekend. "It's ALL YOUR FAULT! It's ALL your fault!" A-wha-haaht? Thus began bizarro-night and the following zombie-day. Monday is Patriot's Day in Massachusetts, a state holiday. So I treated Sunday as a night out, since I'd been sort of good on Saturday and didn't do anything. Right as I walked in the door to Fritz, this guy whom I did not know from Adam started

There's an area of Dallas that has in recent decades transformed from a warehouse/rundown/slummish sort of zone into actual hep cat neighborhoods. I moved to that area and started living in lofts about 20 years ago. I would always tell people coming to see me to pass the dealer on the left and turn right just past the three hookers. Sometimes I'd sit on the roof with friends, wine and cheese and enjoy the downtown view and the bracing sight of street folk using the street as a toilet. There's o
